Although we are a ways away from Madrid, an important event in the history of Spain has occurred while we have been here. After 39 years of ruling Spain, the king, Juan Carlos I, has stepped down and his son, Felipe VI has been coronated the new head of the country. In 1931 the monarchy was abolished, but after Francisco Franco's long dictatorship Juan Carlos was re-installed as king in 1975. Spain is a constitutional monarchy and Juan Carlos has been widely respected for his role in helping the country transition into a democracy.
It's pretty cool that we've been in Spain during this important time for Spaniards!
